Sarah K. Tranakos, PhD.

Psychologist

Sarah Tranakos is a psychologist in private practice treating mental health and relationship issues. In her practice, Sarah focuses on working with individuals and couples. Sarah enjoys working with women and men from late adolescence into adulthood. Dr. Tranakos’ primary strengths are with relationship issues, women’s issues, anxiety, and depression. Dr. Tranakos specializes in relationship issues, and has significant experience working with LGBTQ clients.

TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY & APPROACH

Sarah Tranakos believes that everyone has the power to change, and the first steps to change are insight and awareness. She believes therapy is a collaborative process that involves exploration of current and past experiences. She guides her clients to new healthier behavior and strategies for change through the identification of strengths, development of skills, and focusing on solutions to life and relationship challenges. Dr. Tranakos utilizes an integrative model of cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic theory, mindfulness and Imago Relationship Therapy. Dr. Tranakos believes that therapy is a courageous journey to self-acceptance and healing.

BACKGROUND AND TRAINING

Sarah Tranakos obtained her B.S. in Psychology from Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, TX in 1990.  Following graduation, she worked at Grady Memorial Hospital in The Department of Psychiatry, working with mentally ill adults and children in crisis. In 1997 she obtained a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University in Boston and her Ph.D. from The University of Georgia in Counseling Psychology in 2001. Sarah has been providing therapy for adolescents, adults, couples, and groups for over 25 years in counseling centers, hospital settings and in private practice. Sarah’s research interests and experience has primarily been the examination of issues related to gender, race, and ethnicity, including the design and implementation of a workshop aimed at increasing cultural sensitivity.
